This blog is a continuation of the genetic journey I have told about in earlier postings. It seems like every one of us have genes that descend from Africa, and that the first modern humans migrated out of Africa about 70000-60000 years BP (Before Present) time. I am particularly focusing on the first European hunter and gatherer populations and their path towards northwestern Europe.

The Expansion of Homo Sapiens

Some women with mtDNA N left Caucasus following deer herds towards areas near the Black Sea where they developed a new mtDNA haplogroup R that is defined by HVR-1 mutation 16233.
MtDNA R (probably developed about 61000 years ago, but not yet determined).

Results from a new study Kivisild et al. 2006 shows that the most recent ancestors of all mtDNA haplogroups that developed outside Africa and the African haplogroup L3 lived between 73.000 and 57.000 years ago. They also found that on average the super-haplogroups M, N and R developed outside Africa about 45.000 years BP.
“All European sequences could be assigned to clades N1, X, W, HV, TJ, and U (Torroni et al. 1996; Macaulay et al. 1999; Finnila¨ et al. 2001; Herrnstadt et al. 2002).” (end of quote from Kivisild et al. 2006).

Thousands of years later a new female haplogroup U was developed from R, in Europe the estimated age of mtDNA U is between 58800 and 53600 years BP according to studies by Martin Richards et al. (2000). From U several independent mtDNA haplogroups developed such as U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U6, U7 and U8. All of these mitochondrial U genes are observed in European populations. However, only haplogroup U4 and U5 seem to be of indigenous European origin. The diversity and frequencies of U5 is highest in Western Europe, while U4 have highest diversity and frequency in Eastern Europe.

Kivisild et al. 2006 estimated that the European haplogroup U is 51.000 and 39.000 years old.

In this table by Vincent A Macaulay you can see how the different mtDNA haplogroups are defined by HVR-1 mutations. For instance U5, the haplogroup that I am focusing on in this blog, is defined by 16270 or by 16270, 16296 (add 16 before the numbers in this table).

You can read more about particularly U4 and U5 in the following articles:

From the article:
With a few exceptions U4 is more frequent in Eastern Europe than in Western Europe and is almost absent in the Saami population.
U5 is a 'prototype' western Eurasian lineage cluster with a coalescence age of around 55000-45000 years BP (Richards et al. 2000).
Both U4 and U5 are documented to be from the Upper Palaeolithic and are European mtDNA (Macaulay et al. 1999; Richards et al. 2000).

"Haplogroup U5 is very ancient (»50,000 years old) in both Europe and the Near East, but it occurs more sporadically in the Near East and is absent from Arabia." Referred from Martin Richards et al.(2000).
These articles and other research have shown that people with U5 have migrated back fro Europe to areas such as Turkey, Kurdistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Middle East, Egypt, and to North African Berbers and to the Fulani people of Senegal. In a later blog I will take a look at the about 9000 year old genetic connection between the Saami people and the Berber people of North Africa found by Achilli et al.(2005).
The age of haplogroup U5 is in new research found to be much younger than previous calculations. The U5 people survived and adapted to the cold during the LGM in several ways and this haplogroup people are attributed Northern European origins by Kivisild et al. 2006:
U5 has an estimated age from 27.000 to 17.000 years.
U5a is estimated to be from 22.000 to 14.000 years old. Only one branch of U5a seems to originate in southern Europe the rest in found to be of northern European origin.
U5b is estimated to be from 17.000 to 9000 years old is of northern European origin.

PALAEOLITHIC CULTURES IN EUROPE
There was several
early Modern Human Cultures in Europe before the coldest part of the Last Ice Age also called the "Last Glacial Maximum" (LGM).
Some stone-age cultures were really early ones such as the Russian Gravettian Kostenki culture (45000 - 40000 years ago), the
Aurignacian culture ca. 40000 years ago, the Gravettian culture of Moravia about 33500 – 27500 years ago, the Solutrean (Eastern France) (Solutrean 2) about 21000 year BP and the Magdalenian cultures in the areas of Iberia about 17000 years ago, while people from other cultures such as the Sunghir seems to have arrived the European areas thousands of years later, even if the Sungir culture and some other younger cultures were present 20000 years BP.

[Looking at illustrations in the link over about the central European Moravian culture you can see that they used the same kind of "shaman" drums as in the Saami culture.]

Map over Culture Areas 20.000-15.000 BC / 22.000 – 17.000 BP

THE AURIGNACIAN CULTURE
The earliest
European culture of modern humans in Europe is called “Aurignacian” and as already mentioned it dates back to about 40000 years BP or more and can be found in large areas of Europe. You can see a map in the following site: Time and Space: The Aurignacian culture

Du kan se en kart i følgende web side: Time and Space: The Aurignacian culture

The Gravettian cultures of Kostenki that I now will adress have both Pre-Aurignacian Levels and Aurignacian levels and the last term describes an archaeological period when modern man lived side by side with Neanderthal man.

THE GRAVETTIAN CULTURE
Remains after the first modern humans in Europe from Middle/Upper Palaeolithic (45000 - 40000 years BP) are found in the regions of Kostenki (Kostienki) about 350 kilometres south of Moscow. So far they have found a tooth and remains after sewn clothing of animal skins, stones, bones, and ornaments made with shells of molluscs and a piece of ivory of a mammoth with a carving that seems to be a human figure. Some tools and simple animal traps are also found in different archaeological sites near Don. Genetic tests have shown that the tooth is from a modern human and from their bones it is known that they had apparent Eastern African Physique.

According to Goebel modern humans might have spread out of Africa as late as 60000 to 50000 years BP and the migrations to Europe might have been earlier than previously thought. "The new information, according to Goebel, is based on paleontological evidence of human fossils including a modern human skull from Hofmeyer, South Africa that was discovered in 1952, mitochondrial DNA used to research modern human dispersal from western Asia and archeological evidence from artifacts found at the Kostenki sites along the Don River in Russia." (Referred from the article in the link).

I følge Goebel spredte

To my knowledge the mtDNA of these early arriving people to Europe is not known.
The Gravettian cultures that had developed early in the areas of present Russia seems to have disappeared during the LGM, and the people that later reappeared in these areas after ten thousands of years in Europe and that had survived LGM were Adapted to the Climate Extremes and no longer had African physique. Their cold adaptation was more extreme and with shorter outer limbs than for the people in Iberia according to Hoffecker (2005). Besides developing shorter statures the technologies developed was crucial for survival in the cold.

People from the Gravettian culture seems to have been in refugees on Balkan and Ukraine during LGM, while other people moved south in Europe. John F. Hoffecker (2005) writes that those who reoccupied the plains of Eastern Europe about 20.000 years ago had a different culture and physique than the settlers of the Gravettian culture and that this new emerged culture is called Epi-Gravettian.

There are several alternatives for where the U5 people over wintered during LGM, however since the origin of U5 is found to be northern European (Kivisild et.al. 2006) the most likely refuge during the last Ice Age is Iberia or areas close to Iberia. The Iberia refuge theory for U5 is supported by research e.g. Tambets et al. (2004) and Achilli et al. (2005).
There is support for the theory that the U5b people stayed in the Iberian or nearby refuge areas. Different subgroups of U5b are very low frequently distributed all over Europe and is diverse in Western Europe. The U5b1 frequencies is extreme in the Saami. Archaeological findings dating back 12.000 to 10.000 years in Norway supports the first settlers took a western route along the Norwegian coastal line and all the way up to the arctic. U5b is observed in North African Berber people. The genetic connection between the Saami and the Berber people seem to be a very old one, about 9000 years back in time (Achilli et al. 2005). The U5b people have been around in central Europe very early, and in the area of Urzulei on Sardinia there are extreme frequencies and specific motifs of U5b. I have calculated some rough frequencies based on U5b observations and the size of the sample in Urzulei from the article by Cristina Fraumene et al. 2006:
U5b1 only 4.7% (this is another U5b1 motif than observed in the Saami).
U5b2 15.2%
U5b3 22.4%
Additional support for that U5b over-wintered in Iberia is that the U5b haplotypes is not diverse further east, for instance in Volga Ural (Bermisheva et al. 2002).

U5a most probably also over-wintered in an Iberian or nearby refuge areas during LGM, the even distributions of U5a all over Western Europe and the fact that Cheddar man was found and dated 9000 years BP in England supports this theory. The U5a haplotypes observed further east in Caucasus are by Richards et al. (2000) found to originate from relatively recent migrations from Europe via northern to southern Caucasus where the U5a1 developed, some of these people re-migrated back to Europe again and then developed U5a1a. U5a is more diverse in Volga-Ural than U5b and the second most frequent haplogroup in Volga Ural after haplogroup H (Bermisheva et al. 2002). This might point to a refuge area for U5a in Ukraine or on Balkan during LGM, but this is an assumption that is not supported by research. The origins of most U5a lines are found to be in northern Europe, except for one that is found to be southern European (Kivisild et al. 2006).

CRO-MAGNON MAN

"Cro-Magnon" is the first "anatomically modern humans" in Europe from the Upper Palaeolithic Period about 40000 to 10000 years before present. I have added some links with more information:

Cro-Magnon or Magdalenian man, as exhibited in the A.M.N.H” from The Jesse Earl Hyde Collection, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Department of Geological Sciences. (Click on the hyperlinked text to see a higher resolution photo)

Probably the Cro-Magnons had mtDNA U and U5 and where the ones that decorated the Lascaux and Chauvet caves in France and Altamira cave in Spain between 17000 and 15000 years ago. Even if this seems likely because the U5 people are very old and indigenous in Europe, this is still an assumption until the mtDNA of the Cro-Magnons is tested.

THE MAGDALENIAN CULTURE - DEN MAGDALENSKE KULTUREN

Most Magdalenian sites are found in France (18000 – 11500 years BP) and in Spain (Altamira). People from this culture had creative expressions like the cave paintings seen in the video under. Bone and flint tools were used and the flint objects were similar to the earlier Solutrean culture. There was a finding in 1911 of a person they thought were a Magdalenian girl that in fact was a woman dated to be about 15000 to 13000 years old and the reanalyses of her might reveal mtDNA of these ancient people. So far her remains have been scanned.
The people from the Magdalenian cultures had also adapted to the extreme cold climates in Europe over ten thousands of years, but not in the same degree as the earlier mentioned people from the Gravettian cultures. As with the Gravettian people, the use of technologies and tailored clothing helped people from the Magdalenian cultures to survive the cold. The artistic expressions probably had religious meaning.

RE-MIGRATIONS NORTHWARDS -MIGRASJONER NOROVER IGJEN

Photo: "Courtesy NASA/JPL-Caltech": North-western Europe

The northern parts of western Europe seems to have been repopulated from about 15000 to 13000 years BP by Magdalenian reindeer herder cultures (M. Jochim et al. 1999).
On their northwards migrations one can imagine how the different U and U5 haplogroups have spread in many directions and later developed to geographical specific motifs. It is possible to locate some mtDNA motifs geographically (such as the Saami motif), however for European areas that early became densely populated the genetic motifs are not always easy to trace to exact geographical locality.

Inside Europe mtDNA U is widely spread and observed in almost all populations for instance in Spain, Portugal, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Italy, Russia and in Scandinavia. It reaches its highest frequencies in the Saami people with mtDNA U5.

The following article excellently documents the wide geographical areas in Europe where U is observed.

“mtDNA and the Islands of the North Atlantic: Estimating the Proportions of Norse and Gaelic Ancestry” by Agnar Helgason et al. 2001

MtDNA in the following populations are studied by Agnar Helgason et al. (2001): Austria, European Russia, Finland / Estonia, France / Italy, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Orkney Islands, Scandinavia, Scotland, Bulgaria/ Turkey, Spain/ Portugal, England/Wales, West Isles / West Isles of Skye and the Saami.

MtDNA fra de følgende populasjoner er studert av Agnar Helgason et al. (2001): Østerrike, Europeisk del av Russland, Finland/Estland, Frankrike/Italia, Tyskland, Island, Irland, Orknøyene, Skandinavia, Skottland, Bulgaria/Tyrkia, Spania/Portugal, England/Wales, Vest øyene/ Skye, og samene.

U is observed only in Germany and on Iceland in very low frequencies under 1%.

U1 is observed in low frequencies in all populations studied, except on Iceland, Ireland, Orkney Islands, Scotland, Bulgaria/Turkey, England/Wales and the Saami.

U2 is also observed in low frequencies in some populations but not in European part of Russia, Iceland, Orkney, Bulgaria/Turkey, and the Saami.

U3 is observed in all populations but not in Finland/Estonia, Iceland, Ireland, Orkney, and the Saami.

U4 is observed in low frequencies all over Europe, reaching over 8% in European Russia and is not observed among the Saami.

U5 is observed in low frequencies in almost all countries in Europe, but not in European Russia, Finland and the Saami.

U5a is observed in all European populations. U5a er observert i alle europeiske populasjoner.

U5a1 is observed in low frequencies in all European populations except in France/Italy, Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, Bulgaria/Turkey and West Isles/Isle of Skye. U5a1 er observert lav frekvent i alle Europeiske populasjoner unntatt for i Frankrike, Island, Irland, Skottland, Bulgaria/Tyrkia og på Vest øyene/Skye.

U5b is observed in all European populations except Bulgaria/Turkey. U5b er observert i alle europeiske populasjoner unntatt for i Bulgaria/Tyrkia.

U5b1 is observed only in European Russians, Finland/Estonia, and Scandinavia and is extremely high among the Saami people, reaching 42.61%.

U6 is only observed in Spain and Portugal. U6 er kun observert i Spania og Portugal. Read more about U6 on Rootsweb

U7 is only observed low frequently in Scotland. U7 er kun observert lav frekvent i Skottland.

Another haplogroup that reaches an extreme frequency of 39,77 % in the Saami is mtDNA V and this haplogroup is observed in low frequencies all over Europe but not in Bulgaria/ Turkey. You can read more about this haplogroup in articles added in the side elements of this blog and I will write about this haplogroup in a later blog. My father has mtDNA V with origin in the Skolt Saami (eastern Saami) area. My mother has mtDNA U5b1 with origin in the northern Saami (Kautokeino) area.

Original Source of this picture that illustrates traditional pastoral regions during 18th and early 20th centuries Here you can see mtDNA U5b that is observed in Northern African Berbers and in the Saami, and MtDNA U7 and N2b that is observed in nomad people of the Central Asian and northern Asian steppes.

NEWS from September 2007: The youngest woman (dressed in Royal red) found in a mound grave in Norway with the Oseberg Viking Ship had mtDNA haplogroup U7, which most often is found in the Middle East, Iran and Black Sea areas and is very rare in Europe. The woman with U7 may have been Queen Alvhild (Álfhildur Alfarinsdóttir) that was the first wife of king Gudrød Halvdansson, they got one son named Olav Geirstadalv (Gudrødsson) (Ólaf Geirstaðaálf). Queen Alvhild was the daughter of King Alvarin from Alvheim and it is believed that she died 845 AD. The relationship between the two women found in the grave is still not known. A compelling theory is that the oldest woman was Queen Aasa and mother of the Viking king Halvdan Svarte av Ynglingeætt (Holck 2007) (810 - ca. 860 AD). Aasa was the second wife of king Gudrød Halvdansson Veidekonge. Their son Halvdan Svarte was married to Ragnhild Haraldsdatter and they were parents to Harald Hårfagre (Hairfair) (860-933 AD). U7 reaches frequencies of 9% in Iran, 12% in Gujarat and 9% in Punjab (Mait Metspalu et al. 2004) and 20% in western Iran according to Quintana-Murci et al.(2004).

NEWS from April 2008: Revelations from Viking age

Newer research on U5b motifs - Nyere forskning på U5b motivene:
Only U5b1 defined by (16144, 16189, 16270) and (16144, 16148, 16189, 16270) are specific to the Saami and this U5b1 motif is also called U5b1b1 (ref. Tambets et al. 2004, Achilli et al. 2005). The first motif is found in very low frequencies in a few other populations most probably due to migration of these genes from the Saami areas. The Saami U5b1 has cousin motifs of U5b1 (defined by fewer, additional or other markers), U5b2 and U5b3 in other populations. According to Cristina Fraumene et al. (2006) the U5b1, U5b2 and U5b3 motifs are all defined by sequence changes in the following markers 150T, 3197C, 7768G, 9477A, 13617C, 14182C and 16270T. The Sardinian U5b1 motif mentioned in the article of Fraumene et al. is defined by the following markers: 16167 16189 16270 16311 16356. As you can see this U5b1 cousin motif lacks the 16144 and 16148 markers that characterises the Saami motif.

I følge

U5b2 – An old motif that have been observed in Sardinia and a few other places around the globe.

U5b3 -A specific Sardinian motif that is restricted to the Ogliastra region (Cristina Fraumene et al. 2006).

I have borrowed this map from the book by John Hoffecker (2005) and made some changes. It roughly illustrates how northern Europe was reoccupied after LGM about 20000 years BP.

From a previous referred table you see that U5a is defined 16192 16270 or by 16187, 16192, 16270 and Richards et al.(2000) found that this genetic motif developed between 24400 and 14000 years ago. In England the remains of the "Cheddar Man" shows that these U5a (16192T, 16270T) genes were early there. Cheddar man that is believed to be a hunter and gatherer was found in a cave in southern England and lived about 9000 years ago. A direct descendant of Cheddar man is Adrian Targett. What a great and interesting experience it must be for him to have been able to trace his ancestors so far back in time, you can read more here:

Adrian Targett a relative of Cheddar man

U5a er definert av 16192 16270 or by 16187, 16192, 16270.

OLD GERMAN AND NORDIC CULTURES

Hamburgian Culture: approximately 15000 to 14000 years ago (omtrentlig 15000 til 14000 år siden).

Federmesser Culture: 14000 to 13400 years ago (14000 til 13400 år siden).

Bromme Culture: 13400 to 12200 years ago (13400 til 12200 år siden).

Ahrensburgian Culture: 12200 to 10900 years ago (12200 til 10900 år siden).

Magdalenian colonization of southern Germany after LGM about 15000-13000 years BP was not massive according studies by Michael Jochim et al. (1999), there was a rather slow and discontinuous repopulation of these northern areas.

My knowledge is restricted regarding findings and research on the Hamburgian culture that preceded the Ahrensburgian migrations northwards. Archaeological findings are sparse. There is some research going on here in Norway of 11000-year-old settlements in southern Norway (article text in Norwegian). If some human remains are found it might be possible to study ancient genes.
News from September 2007: Unique finds from Stone Age in Larvik, Norway 2007 (Norwegian text only). In Larvik Norway they found an 11000 to 12000 year old Stone Age settlement. So far there are no reports of human remains. This old settlement probably belongs to the Old Hamburgian migrations of people northwards after the last Ice Age.

Then there are studies of old DNA in Sweden that where published in September 2007: Om den Gropkeramiska kulturen och Skandinaviens kolonisering (text only in Swedish). For some or another reason the researcher Helena Malmstöm holds back results of the haplogroups of the Ancient DNA tested: ”Ancient DNA as a Means to
Investigate the European Neolithic” by Helena Malmström (2007)
. This fact undermines the reliability of the conclusions of the study. There are no ethical problems or dilemmas with publishing the haplogroups, location and dating of such old human remains.

Previously there are findings of 10000-11000 year old settlements and remains after burnt bones at Magerøya in Finnmark, Norway. In the areas of Finnmark in Norway archaeologists are searching for more remains after the Stone Age people that lived about 10000 years ago: Rundt seksti meter over havet kan man finne svaret på gåten om steinaldermenneskene som levde for 10 000 år siden (Translated title: About 60 meters above present sea level one can solve the riddle about the Stone Age people that lived 10000 years ago).

There seem to have been some parallels and continuity between the Hamburgian Culture and the later Brommian Cultures of Scandinavia and this article by Egidijus Šatavičius discusses this and also points to “Brommian (Lyngby) finds in Lithuania”

In an old book “Denmark before the Vikings” by Dr. Glyn Daniel, Ole Klindt-Jensen (1957) writes the following:
“Occasionally tools, such as a variety of knife made from reindeer-antler, have been found that can be assigned to the Late Glacial period. The people of this period may have belonged to a group of hunters of the Hamburg Ian culture, which is well known in the areas south of the Danish border at the extreme south of Jutland. They used tools of flint; arrow-heads, scrapers and different types of burin, as well as tools of antler and bone” (End of quote). These findings are from the Bromme culture in late Palaeolithic about 12000 years before present and they are Carbon 14 tested. The Bromme culture in Denmark consisted of very few individuals but it lasted for thousands of years.

Brommian (Lyngby) finds in Lithuania

Ahrensburgian sites are found in large expanses throughout North Europe and even in the northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, beyond the Arctic Circle.”

Ahrensburg Culture (click to learn more about this culture)

The commonly held view today is that the earliest settlement of the North Norwegian coast originated on the western and southwestern coast of Norway and ultimately in the final Palaeolithic Ahrensburg Culture of northwestern Europe (Grydeland 2005).

MtDNA U5b is defined by HVR-1 mutations 16189, 16270 or by 16189, 16270, 16311 and has according to Richards et al. (2000) developed between 22900 and 13100 years BP.

MtDNA U5b er definert av HVR-1 mutasjonene 16189, 16270 eller av 16189, 16270, 16311 og har i følge Richards et al. (2000) utviklet seg for mellom 22900 og 13100 år siden.

In this diagram tree you can see the mutations included in different motifs of U5b / I denne lenken kan du se et trediagram over mutasjoner som er inkludert i ulike motiv av U5b:

THE SAAMI ANCESTORS LEFT THEIR U5B COUSINS IN CENTRAL EUROPE AND IN ISOLATION THEY DEVELOPED A SPECIFIC U5B MOTIF

– SAMENES FORMØDRE FORLOT SINE U5B KUSINER I SENTRAL EUROPA OG UTVIKLET I ISOLASJON ET SPESIELT U5B MOTIV

Ancestors of the Saami people went further north following the reindeers and left their genetic U5b cousins on the central European continent. They became isolated in the blistering cold probably for thousands of years and developed their own specific mutations of U5b, namely U5b1 or U5b1b1.

This postcard from Lapland is more than 70 years old and within the public domain (click on the photo to see a larger picture).

The present Saami population have a specific genetic U5b motif called U5b1 or U5b1b1 (the Saami motif) that is defined by HVR-1 mutations (16144, 16189, 16270) and (16144, 16148, 16189, 16270). The estimated age of this U5b1 motif is between 15000 and 10000 years before present and most likely it have developed in the Saami ancestors in the northwestern corner of Europe. Much evidence supports that the historical Saami areas was much larger than at the present, and included the Scandinavian Peninsula, from the Kola Peninsula and probably all the way to Estonia (where there still are a few local Saami citizens).

Martin Richards et al. (2000) writes the following regarding the two mtDNA haplogroups U5b and V that by Tambets et.al.(2005) is found in nearly 90% of the Saami women (Tambets et.al.2005): “The principal exception is cluster V, which seems to have expanded within Europe »13,000 YBP (Torroni et al. 1998). Cluster U5 is an additional unusual case. Although U5 occurs at »2% in the Near East, its phylogeography, as we discuss below, suggests that it evolved mainly within Europe during the past »50,000 years“ (end of quote).
Research results from Rootsi et al. (2004) shows that the female U5b genes go together with the male genetic haplogroup called I1a at a highly significant level (positive correlation of .60 at .999 CR interval), these men also are highly correlated (positive correlation of .47 at .999 CR interval) with the other highly frequent Saami genes mtDNA V. Research of Torroni et al. (1998, 2001) and Tambets et al (2004) have suggested that both mtDNA U5b and V expanded from Iberia.

I will later continue to write about these historical and genetic migrations from south to the northwest and arctic Europe and then look closer on the genes and culture of the old indigenous Saami people in Scandinavia and on the Kola Peninsula in Russia.
